Alcohol Ink Coasters

Did you know that Home Depot no longer sells 4x4" ceramic tiles?

The salesperson I spoke with said that that particular size has become dated and there's no demand for it in ceramic?

But how will I create alcohol ink coasters?!

Next size up is 6x6"…  a little big but maybe I can pass these off as trivets?

Or they can be coasters that are big enough for your cup and your cookie?

Regardless, this was a technique I've been dying to try out and I had to give it a whirl.

First off, you need ALCOHOL ink refills, not water-based ones.

I'm telling you this because I tried it with my Stampin' Up refills, which are water based, and it just looks like a food colouring smudge:

  They aren't awful, but they don't have the interest that the graphic lines created by the alcohol ink do.

You will need:

• white ceramic tiles
• rubbing alcohol
• alcohol ink refills
• small brush

Just add contrasting colours as you like and watch as they spread and meld together to create interesting patterns.

 I got a little carried away...

Make sure they are dry, i.e. no little puddles of colour or alcohol anywhere, and then coat with a protector/sealer.

If you're going to use them as trivets, you'll need a sealer that is heat tolerant, or else any varnish you put on will just melt off with the first hot pot that sits on it.

If you're using them as coasters, you can get away with just a light coat of mod podge.

I put small cork pads on so that they don't scratch anything.

I think a 6x6" tile is going to work out just fine…
Room for my chai latte and a couple of mint smoothies!
