UNBELIEVABLE Apple Pie

I'm not kidding.

This pie is incredible, amazing, scrumptious and by far the best apple pie I've ever tasted.

I found the recipe on Allrecipes.com, but I made a few changes to it so I'm going to post my slightly altered version.

Ingredients


  • 2 pie shells (I used pre-made Tenderflake ones) 
  • 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 8 apples - assorted varieties for the best flavour.  I used Red Delicious, Gala, Empire and MacIntosh.
  • 1 tbsp all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar


Directions


  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.  (220 C)
  • Melt the butter in a saucepan.
  • Stir in the flour to form a paste.
  • Add the water, white sugar and brown sugar and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce temperature and let simmer.
  • Peel and chop the apples to bite sized pieces.
  • In a bowl mix the apples with 1 tbsp each of flour, cinnamon and brown sugar.
  • Stir until covered.
  • Pour apples into prepared pie shell.  (I really overfilled it)
  • Poke steam holes into the remaining pie shell and then place on top of the bottom crust.
  • Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust.  Pour slowly so that it does not run off, but instead covers the top crust and oozes in through the steam holes.
  • Put on a cookie sheet (it will ooze slightly) and bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven.
  • Reduce temperature to 350 degrees F (175 C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes (until apples are soft).


Makes one 9" pie or 12 tarts. (adjust cooking times if making tarts)

Pouring the liquid over top makes the top crust crispy; almost like a candy-coated crust.

I made a pie for Thanksgiving and then another 36 Apple Pie tarts to have on hand in the freezer.

Hubby doesn't like apple pie.  

Since I forced him to try this one - he can't stop devouring them.

Truly - it's that good!

  1. Thank you for posting this! I've been looking at that recipe for the last five years and thought it was just weird. I mean who pours sauce over raw dough? But your article made me try it. I took it out of the oven about two hours ago. We just finished dinner and had our pie. OMG! It really looked magazine worthy (I made the lattice crust), and tasted divine. This is going to be our Thanksgiving pie. Thanks for giving me a nudge. Candice

    1. I have to be honest and say that I'm not that great a chef to have found pouring the syrup over the shell that odd. I actually thought that's how it was supposed to work! lol Regardless, I'm glad we (both) tried the recipe - now we can be the holiday rockstars in our families!
