As soon as I saw the image, I HAD to try!
I can't link you back to the blog that had the original post because the image has been taken from that post, used in a secondary (compilation) post and the original author wasn't given credit. (shame on you compilation blogger!)
For now, here's my version of the craft:
You need about 100 straws and a plastic tie (the kind that tighten, but don't loosen)
Our Dollarama only had the coloured straws with the flexible ends - which at first I thought wouldn't work - but wait till you see!
I mixed up the ends so that there were bendy sections going both ways.
I bunched them in an elastic to make them easier to hold and then wrapped the tie around.
Remove the elastic and pull the tie as tight as you can.
As the straws become crushed they spread out into a sphere shape.
I put a small hole in the tie itself and attached an ornament hanger.
The tutorial I saw online used white straws, so their last step was to spray paint the straws to be more festive.
In this case, the colours aren't Christmas-y, but I think they're pretty cute as-is:
I took ours outside and hung them in our tree.
Inexpensive, easy and cute - the perfect decoration!

Hi: My Granddaughter and I tried to make the sphere this morning. We love the look, but we are having trouble getting the tie to crush all the straws. We used skinny straws and the tie is about the same size as the straws. We put the tie in the center of the straws, but it looks like you put yours closer to the bottom of the pile. Our straws didn't all crush and we can't get the tie to get any tighter. We have what looks like a flower with the tie as the stem. Any help would be appreciated, we think they will look great on our bare trees like you have shown in your pictures. By the way, the spheres you made are beautiful. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI did put my plastic tie in the middle of the straws - perhaps the photo doesn't do it justice. Try taking a pair of needle nose plyers and pulling on the tie with them while holding the straws. It should give you a bit extra torque and will help in REALLY crushing the centres of the straws. Once you've pulled it as tight as you possibly can, you then "fluff" the straws out a bit. It's okay to bend them to give your ornament a more rounded look. Try and let me know if it's better.
