DIY Hallowe'en Decor

This project was fun.
Believe it or not, it was actually 'adrenaline pumping fun'.

Let me explain before you think I'm a total loser….
actually, when I do explain it will confirm that I'm a total loser. lol

I am clumsy.

VERY clumsy.
I can walk around the house without tripping over my feet (most days), but when it comes to tools - I am a MESS.

Proof - clearly I can't work a mandolin slicer.

I've fallen off a ladder a few times and have actually managed to skewer both palms with whatever it was I landed on.  I've put a chisel halfway through my thumb and have just about sliced the top of my finger off using a hedge trimmer (hint: don't hold the branch you're trimming).
Most of my scars are from tools.  (I think that's why I love my sander so much - a power tool that hasn't removed more than a millimetre of skin here and there).

SO, in order to make this project I had to use a saw.
Not just any saw; Hubby's mitre saw.
A big, loud, 'I could bleed to death if I screw up' machine.

But Hubby wasn't home to turn to, and I really wanted to make this project…  so I did it….
I cut three pieces of wood at 18" (46cm) long.

The adrenaline was pumping at this point and I still had 10 fingers, so I cut another 3.5 x 3.5" (9 x 9cm) square.

THEN, I cut that square in half on a diagonal (to make the arrow end).

WAHOOO!

One very small chip of wood in the eye - wear protective glasses everyone - but no blood!

I screwed the triangle pieces down into the long plank of wood and then used a bit of wood filler to lessen the look of the gap between the pieces.

Next up - the post.

More scrap wood from the garage, and more mitre saw action.
You can see that I cut all the edges at a 45 degree angle - wrongly - which makes the base look awkward - but hey, it stands, so I'm happy.

Sand it all down;

Then add a couple of coats of black exterior paint. (Mine was paint and primer in one, so I didn't need a separate coat of primer first.  Check your brand before starting just in case you do need to do this extra step.)

I used vinyl decals again and put a light coat of black over top of them to stop any top-coat bleed-through.

Then on to the orange!

The black sign just has decals attached to it - I didn't paint over it again.

Carefully peel off;

Then attach to your sign post with screws.

I love this!

There WILL be another post showing a Christmas one - it was too exciting (and easy) to not build more!

Next time - bigger, taller, bolder!

Daily GlamJockey P2P look of the day:

dark wash bootcut jeans, ribbed scoop neck in beige and zig zag scarf tied like a vest.

Have a great one!
