How to clean your barbecue grills

[This is a delayed follow-up to the post from Monday.]

It's SPRING!
Time to get the summer furniture out of storage, and time to light the Bar-B.

Unless your Bar-B (Q) looks like ours.  Then I'd like to suggest that a cleaning is in order.

Using the same technique as I did when I cleaned my stove grates on Monday, I attempted to clean Hubby's pride and joy;

Grills before:

 Hubby calls this "seasoning".
I call it toxic-looking.

 And what is going on with the inside of the lid?
What if some of this crap drops onto our burgers, or worse yet, a steak!

 Same process as last Monday;
put the grills in a big garbage bag with a dish of ammonia.
Seal the bag so that it's air-tight and leave in the sunshine for at least 12-24 hours.

Ours were so disgusting, I did the sun method AND then I put them in the stove to do the stove method I also mentioned here.

I'm not going to lie and say that the gunk wiped off easily.
I did have to scrape and scrub with steel wool - but without the ammonia pre-treatment I wouldn't have even made a dent.

A little elbow grease, some scraping and a lot of marble paste and even the barbecue lid is looking fit for human cooking.

Note:  wear gloves when scrubbing.  This burnt on crap is sharp!  (learned the hard way)

One more day of soaking in fumes might have made the grills perfect, but with a few bloody knuckles and an impatient husband, this was the best I could do (for now).

At the very least, whatever those toxic flakes were on the lid, they aren't there to ruin my tenderloin anymore - and that's the most important thing.

Have a great one!

  1. Thank you for this instructive post! With summer rapidly approaching, I am going to use this method of cleaning for sure. I appreciate knowing there is an easier way to clean up the BBQ. (I hate using oven cleaner with its toxic after-effects!) Rosie @ The Magic Hutch
