Grocery tips

I was putting groceries away today and I thought that maybe these might be a couple of tips that you don't already know…
(If you do, I'm sorry for repeating.)

First off, berries….
I find they have the shortest lifespan of any fruit and if you get just one molecule of mold on one berry, the entire batch is ruined very quickly.

To help destroy mold I wash our berries (all fruit actually) in a giant dish of room temperature water and vinegar.

Say 1 cup of vinegar per 10 cups of water, and let soak for about 10 minutes.
This should kill and/or remove any mold spores that are lurking in any crevices.

Pat dry with a paper towel and then store in an airtight container.

My go-to container of choice are the Tupperware Fridgesmarts - and I've honestly had (fresh) strawberries last 3 weeks doing just this.

Another thing I like to do is to prep my salad lettuce as soon as I buy it.
Sure you could go with the $4.99 pre-packaged salads, or you could go with the $1.47 head of iceberg lettuce and cut it yourself.

Do you know how to core a head of lettuce?

Hold the head in both hands, stem down, and then slam it on the counter fairly hard.
This will dismantle the core from the centre of the head and you can just pull it out.

Rinse, cut to bite-sized pieces and store in an airtight container.

Voila - salad ready to pack in school lunches, or as a quick side with dinner.

Just a couple of small things that make morning lunches or the dinner scramble a little less hectic.

There's just a couple more days left to enter - Mom will love you if you do!

Have a great one!

  1. Hi, I love the tips. Did not know about the mold spores. Do you clean the lettuce with vinegar also? Thanks, Fran

    1. I don't do the lettuce - I find it retains too much water and gets soggy quickly - but just about every fruit where you eat the skin I do.
