Getting Rid of Greys

I celebrated my 41st birthday last week.

Not a milestone birthday, but another reminder that time is moving on.

Much like this reminder:
 UGH!

I've had a grey/gray hairs here and there since I was in my mid twenties.
The downside of dark hair - you can see immediately whenever one of these bad boys moves in.

I do plan to have a beautiful head of silver grey someday - but I'm not quite ready to throw in the colour towel yet.

I struggle every couple of months with the frivolity of colouring my hair;
Do I spend the big bucks and have a professional do it, knowing my hair will feel better and the colour will last longer -

or do I do it myself and save the $100 or so dollars knowing that it has to get re-done over and over.

This month - for my birthday - I decided to let a professional do it

But she didn't have any room available for me that day.

Did I mention I'm pretty impulsive?

Bottle-job it is!

I found this - which I'd never seen before - colour and highlights in one box.
Looks pretty easy:

and let's face it, I really only buy the colour with the best looking girl on the box anyways.

Some secret wish that this little box of youth will not only transform my greys, but my entire person!

I always put a layer of skin cream around my hairline.  My skin loves to soak up colour and this helps to make sure I can wipe off any spills.
No point covering the greys if you're just going to paint giant liver spots everywhere else. lol

Colour first:
Seems to have good grey coverage - but it's really coppery… (sweat beads forming).
It covered them, but even my scalp is copper coloured now.
(sweat is starting to soak through my shirt)

Dry your hair per normal and then proceed with the highlight application.

I meant to do thin stripes like the girl on the box (after all, I'm going to turn into her when this is all done right?), but they came out pretty chunky.

(anxiety has even got sweat dripping down my back now)

Rinse, condition and dry as per usual:
Exhale - not bad.

I did use a shine enhancer to try to bring the highlights out more.
I think this stuff might be a keeper.
A little airbrushing and eye-whitening and...
… still not the girl on the box.

Oh well, greys are gone and that was the point.

I'll update this post later to let you know how long this colour lasts - but as of today I'd say I'll be using this stuff again!

 ("because I'm worth it")

Have a great one!

  1. It looks great! I was a little nervous for you in the early stages, lol, but it actually turned out really nice, didn't it? The color is flattering. And with this being your first time, you're bound to get better with each try. I like it. Especially the savings! ~ Jane

    1. Thanks so much! You were nervous? I wasn't kidding when I said I had sweat rolling down my back! lol Oh well, my favourite saying is "the only difference between a good haircut (or colour) and a bad one, is three weeks). Thanks commenting!

  3. Hmmmm I think I may have found myself a new colour option. I prefer the "brushed in look" for my highlights and since you guinea pigged it for us!
Btw it was great meeting you yesterday and I look forward to connecting and talking about your blog

  6. It looks good, Shelly! Has more depth than the usual flat colour that home dyes can have.

    1. The style is called "chaos" and I've mastered it! First run the hairdryer for too long until your hair stands up on end, all the while yelling at your kids to quit fighting and get ready. Hairspray the mess in place and hope for a rainstorm! lol
Thanks for checking out the blog - are you a Mompreneur as well?

  11. Good tips...I've tried colouring my hair a couple of times & have failed miserably...even enlisting my husband to help out once! He was so thrilled. This kind of looks manageable. I turned 43 this week...and the greys come in faster every day!
