Before and After - Portable Kitchen Island

(AKA the "Kellet Unit")

Friends of mine saw this unit and e-mailed me right away.
Turns out it was a great piece, but with a giant mark on the top.
The owners were going to post it on Kijiji, but my friends talked them into selling it to me for $30.

Yup - $30!

Tell me these aren't the kind of friends you'd want?
It's a portable kitchen island I think?
It has a flip up back that you could put a couple of bar stools under.
Only problem was the top...
Yikes!
But no match for my DeWalt sander!
This is the piece I decided to to the faux granite technique on - from the tutorial I posted the other day.
Still one or two touch ups needed (like between the drawers) - but basically done.
Turned out pretty well eh?
This is another I'd keep if I had any room for it.
See how smooth and glassy that epoxy finish makes it?
It's also super durable.  More so than a regular counter top.

I still wouldn't put scalding hot pots on it, or chop a side of beef up without a cutting board... but it would hold up better than laminate if that was what you wanted to do.
A couple of before and afters for my Pinterest board:

Envision a cutting board loaded with various cheeses and a chilled bottle of white sitting on top.

Or in  my house - empty lunch bags and dirty dishes.

I drink while I workout. I call it 'Bacardio'.

  1. What a fabulous deal, and a fabulous job! Too bad you can't keep it :(.

I did a faux granite treatment on a kitchen counter and was very happy with how it turned out, but adding the epoxy is a great touch. It truly looks spectacular! (found you via BNOTHP)

    Have a great day!

    1. If you've already done the granite painting, the epoxy would really make it stand out.
It's really not that hard, I have a tutorial posted on my blog as well http://100things2do.blogspot.ca/2013/09/creating-faux-granite.html.
If you go ahead - please send me before and afters!
