Before & After - Lego Table

This project took a long time.

Normally, I would have whipped out a nightstand in a day or two, but this one was well over a week.

Mostly because I couldn't decide what I wanted to do with it.

This is what I started with:

Awful - but on the other hand - nothing but potential.

I started with a good sanding, and as you can see there were more than 3 layers of paint on this one.
I knew I was going to paint it, so all I was going for was a deep enough sanding to give it a nice, smooth surface.

While at Benjamin Moore for another project, I saw their colour of the season "Breath of Fresh Air" - so I bought a tester (which are pretty substantial in size!) and gave it a whirl.

Love the colour, love the stain - but not together and not on this project.

Time to rethink - I wanted to keep the blue - but what would this little table be used for?

There's no back on it, so who would want a small table, with a drawer with no back on it?

KIDS!

I decided I was going to make this into a Lego table!
I know just the boys it will be for!

Leaving the back open means that a basket of legos can be shared between them without any arguing.

BRILLIANT! (even if I do say so myself)

I cut out some vinyl lettering and put it on the side, then did a very light coat of the blue so that the next coat wouldn't bleed under.

Two coats of black over the outside…

and (I don't usually do this), a coat of varnish over top.

Boys and legos will probably be pretty hard on this one - the varnish was just in the hopes it might last a bit longer before chipping.

Retrofit with a basket to hold all the legos.

Now at this point I should have adhered lego plates to the top surface….

but I don't have any.

I don't even know if they sell them separate from the building kits.

(So you'll just have to use your imagination.)

Open on both sides so the boys can share the toys!

Have a great one!
