Dogs on Canvas

I go crazy with magazines.

I love to see all the ideas they have, rip them out, and then save them to see if later I can come up with a knock-off version.

This is one of those knock-offs.

From GrandinRoad.

They are selling these cute French Bulldog paintings for $194 US EACH.

20" by 20" - on stretched canvas, for $194 EACH?!

Well, I have a cute dog…

I have lots of paint

Canvas was on sale at Michael's - 5 pieces (16" x 20") for 24.99

I think I can beat this.
I had photos of Lacey printed at 16" x 20" size at Staples (request a blueprint in the special instructions section and give your measurements).

Each one cost $0.81.

I carefully cut out the photos - trying to capture little hairs etc as best I could.
I tried adhering it with spray adhesive, but the canvas - at this size - was pretty flexible so it didn't stick very well.

I flipped the photo over so that when painting over it, the printer ink didn't bleed into the paint.

I used an inexpensive foam roller to lightly coat over the paper.

There were a few areas where the pink smudged a bit, but I was planning on painting it over with a warmer white anyways - so it was no biggie.
Lacey's standing at an angle so her front legs look awkward - but if you imagine that her left shoulder is in front of her right leg - it makes more sense.
Touch up the rough spots.

Add a second coat of the pink. (I snuck in a bit of glitter)

And VOILA!

Pretty cute for about $10 each eh?

You don't have to limit yourself to dogs either.  Amazing Amy made a couple of smaller canvasses for her kitchen.

This image is upside down because we were working on opposite sides of the counter.
But here's the finished product:

Isn't that blue gorgeous?!

I just saved you $183!

Have a great one!

  1. Oh, Shelly, how very clever. I've looked at those GrandinRoad prints numerous times. I have a Frenchie and thought they were so cute - but no way am I paying that much for a Frenchie silhouette no matter how much I love my little girl! The nicest thing about doing your own is you can make them any color you want. I'm going to give this a try. Thanks!!!

    1. I'm so pleased that you're pleased! I loved the canvasses as well - but given that I made mine in about an hour and spent about $10 each - the mark-up on theirs was INSANE!
Send photos - I'd love to see your finished product!

Thanks for checking ou the blog - pssssst - pass it on!

  2. Shelly, this is so cute. You could turn this into a business and make them for people! Seriously!

  3. I am a mompreneur and I love this. It sure saved money. You are super clever and I just found this blog strangely when I spied you on Facebook. I'd love to win the ticket. inkscrblr@rogers.com Paula Schuck. I blog sometimes - thriftymommastips.com. I tweet often @inkscrblr and once in awhile I loves me some Facebook. But tonight I just want to pin. (Because I am supposed to be invoicing and that is so dull.)

  4. Btw, I love the little individual hairs and fluff. That is what makes it seem so real!

What kind of dog is Lacey? ~ Jane

    1. She's a Bernese Mountain dog - but she's only 6 months old right now, so she's at about half size and half her full coat length. The breed also tends to have curls on their back, so it was fun to try to capture while she's still a pup. Thanks again for all the kind words and support on the blog!
