Monster'd Front Porch

It started with this pin from Pinterest:

I clicked the link to go to the site and check out the tutorial - and nothing.
Just the same photo with a bunch of ads surrounding it.

Given that the genius that created this didn't post a tutorial, I thought it's only fair that I attempt it and then post mine.

Plagiarizing the idea, but not the technique.

Kind of fair?

Still stealing?

Okay - but to your benefit when you see how easy it is.

I measured out the distance between the pillars on my front porch.
I didn't want to use a sheet of wood to make this
1. because I wasn't sure it was going to turn out and
2. because I didn't want to have to store another large decoration.

I did have a roll of paper?
I folded it on itself 4 times and lightly glued down the layers.

I then folded those layers in half and sketched out how I wanted the teeth to look.

Once I had what I wanted I just cut it out.

Open it up and you'll see you have two equal sides of the mouth.

I duct taped along the top edge... I knew that the paper wouldn't withstand the damp weather, but I thought a few rows of tape on either side would help to reinforce the areas that would be attached to the brick.

I did a couple of coats of paint:

I did use wood for the eyes - this part of the face was going to be on the outside of my front porch, so it would have to be stronger to withstand rain etc.

I lucked out and found a scrap piece in the garage that would fit two eyes - and as a bonus, it was already painted!
Hubby cut them out for me and I added the green iris and the black pupils by tracing out two different sized Tupperware bowls. (so my circles would be equal and perfectly round)
I just added the black outline to the teeth to make it stand out a bit more.
In the original Pinterest photo, the person actually drew between the teeth, but I wasn't sure it was necessary. (or that I wouldn't ruin what I'd done so far)

Hubby hung them for me with a couple of tap-con screws and voila!
Maddie's pretending she's been eaten.
I love it!
If you'd like one custom-made to fit your front porch contact me in the comment section below.

Thank you to whomever posted the original pic.

  2. I don't think it's stealing if they failed to give a tutorial, like yourself. And I must thank you, it looks great. We love Halloween at my house and I'm definitely trying this one today. Great job. Crystal
