When I wanted to compile my "100 Random Acts of Kindness" list, I knew she would be a super source for ideas for the kids.
One thing she mentioned was (at our hospital anyways) the nurses try to give each child their own pillowcase. Something a little less institutional than the standard cases.
Something to make things a little homier for them.
BRILLIANT!
Then, after posting my list, a reader contacted me to say that she'd seen that entry and that she knew of a program called "APQ - 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge". (thank you Ashley Z.)
They encourage people to make pillowcases and donate them to local charities.
If you let the site know, they'll keep a running tally of how many have been donated.
As I'm typing this post, they have reached over 500,000 pillowcases!
WONDERFUL!
Yesterday, a girl from my neighbourhood came by and offered me some scrap material that she had lying around. I hadn't put out feelers for material. Pillowcases were not on my mind - but it seemed as though all the stars aligned right at the same time.
SERENDIPITOUS!
So, I got to sewing:
The site has an amazing tutorial on what they call a "Roll it up" seam.
I LOVE that material - I may have to go in search to make more! |
It leaves a nice finished edge on both sides.
It took about an hour to make 6 cases.
All prettied up and ready for delivery to the hospital!
When it all comes together like that, you can't fight kismet.
Have a great one!
